I, like many, take an unlocked mobile phone and buy a local sim card for it. I like Mentari. There is a cheap code to phone home which is 01016 followed by the country code ie. 61 Australia or 44 UK, then the area code etc.without the first 0. It is extremely cheap to call. To text you use +61 or +44 etc. then the mobile number minus the first 0. Its only a bit more than $2 for the sim and then you just buy credit from all over the place. Credit for your mobile is known as "pulsa"
If you tell us which area you will be staying in somebody will know a reliable non-ripoff place to buy a sim.
