No, there wouldn't be seats on the itinerary if you haven't purchased them. I always purchase at least the cheapest seats to make sure as we've got young kids. A few years ago Tiger tried to seat us all separately (on that occasion we did have 3 different itinerary's booked so I can understand but it still caused a drama). We fly AA alot and I did witness on a recent flight a woman going 'off' about the fact they'd not seated her with the kids. The kids were a little older than mine tho, not really young.
With young children I wouldn't take the chance myself : )
