I've flown many times with Virgin with large bags and have never had a problem with size. As long as it is not one of those bags that is taller than you, you should be fine.
Kazza007k is correct also re. baggage allowance. Find and print your original confirmation email, that will have your included baggage allowance on it and take it with you to the airport. Griound crew at Virgin are usually pretty helpful as long as you are polite and reasonable to them too.
