It leaves and awful taste in your mouth when these things happen. Have been scammed many times in various locations around Asia so it is not just a Bali thing. When leaving Vietnam an official pulled me aside (I was travelling on my own) and told me I had to pay departure tax which I had already paid. She refused to let me through until I handed over $200, I refused and she stood her ground "You no pay, you no get on plane" and she meant it. There was no way she was going to let me through. Time was running out, my flight was boarding and basically I had to hand over $200 or miss my flight. Not a very nice way to end what had been a fantastic holiday!!
