My friend purchased a camera in Perth duty free & was held up in customs in March & they demanded she pay A$650 in customs duty. She refused & they lowered it to $400 & then $200 & then finally they told her that she could leave it there & pick up when she flew out. They gave her a receipt & off we went. She was freaking out & we contacted the consulate who assured her that if it was not there when she went to pick it up, then to contact them directly & they would come to the airport.
It was there but I it was not a very nice welcome to Bali!
They did (customs) explain that if it was used, there was no problem but because it was new she would have to pay.
Sure we now know that money talks but at the time it's quite frightening.
