When AA has a sale their servers do get very busy. You only have 10mins to complete your details so sometimes it's a good idea just to secure your flights. You can wait a couple of days till it is a bit quietier and then log on, pick the modify your booking option and pick your seats, luggage and meals.
The seats can go very quickly (especially over school holiday periods) so I usually persever (it can take around 2+ hours sometimes)
