For my money the whole point of Seminyak is that it's removed from Kuta and full of amazing restaurants (which are expensisve by Balinese standards, but cheaper than in Australia). If you are not into fancy food - or expensive boutique shopping - I am not sure that Seminyak's for you. That said, you can of course find cheap food.
The traffic to get to Kuta from Seminyak is often horrendous (in a taxi it's often at leaset 30 minutes.)
