I copied this from the Forum last year:-
Walking Tour Denpasar
Starting at the Badung markets in the centre of Denpasar on Jalan Gajah Mada. Avoid any contact with people who want to "help" you see the markets or offer to bargain for you - they will cost you money for nothing. You will find everything from textiles, clothes, buckets, bottles, vegetables, fresh killed meats, pungent spices, etc - 3 storeys of treasure. Then go a little way into Jln Sulawesi which runs N/S beside the markets. This has a fantastic range of shops selling textiles of every kind. Then go east along Gajah Mada again passing all kinds of shops - 5 minute walk if not stopping. You will come to an intersection with a large statue in the centre. There will be the mayoral building on your right and the central city park across to your right. Turn left into Jln Veteran and walk north. You will come to the Inna Bali Hotel on your left - this is the first hotel in Bali from the Dutch era and worth a stop for a mixed juice by the pool or on their terrace beside the street. Carry on north past all kinds of shops with some very good electronic and appliance shops much cheaper than in tourist areas. On the left is 2 storey art market where many traders get their stock so prices good if you bargain well. Then on right of road is the Bird Market with all sorts of birds and other creatures. Jln Veteran also has one or two very good Chinese style eating places.
Apart from at the initial markets you should be in a "tourist free zone" so can enjoy pretending to be a Denpasar resident.
