I rarely wear anything with pockets when I'm in Bali, so there's not much option but to carry a bag. Though I don't carry a big bag, just one of those small woven shoulder bags/pouches, big enough to hold wallet, phone, keys and usually a chap stick and hand cleanser.
I'm usually pretty aware of keeping it close to me and having it the side of my body away from the street etc. I do the same at home.
