We purchased 4 paintings on our last visit to Bali. The we brought all of them back framed but the only one we purchased from Sukawati markets didn't pass through customs so they removed the frame.
Just make sure that you look VERY closely for signs of holes in the wood.
Our best buys were from a large store across the road from the Stadium Bar? in Kuta, Geneva, and a small shop across the road from the Kusnadi in Legian. We will be going back in 2 weeks and expect to buy a few more and will most definately heading to the one in Legian - they are absolutely brilliant and we have seen them paint various things from VWs through to flowers and animals and even a baby's black and white portrait from a very small photo. I could not recommend them enough!
Prices were very reasonable - the most we paid was (from memory) AU$50.00.
Hope this helps!
