Hi
In my humble opinion, I don't like the 'Rip Off' tag. In a free economy people charge what people are prepared to pay. I am sure, that at home, we have all had the experience where we have paid (what we thought)was a great price for something only to find out that we could have got it cheaper somewhere else. It is no different in Bali. The locals will tell you that there are different prices for different nationalities i.e. the Japanese normally don't haggle as much and will generally pay more than say an experienced Aussie who will haggle.

It all works out in the wash for the sellers. They will make virtually nothing on one sale and pick up a bit more on the next sale.

I feel the best way to look at what you pay is if you feel that it is good value for you than it is a fair price.

Also I agree with the other posters i don't see how you could hand over 1/2 a mill for a taxi fare
