I wouldn't be too paranoid about The Age drumming up Bali-centric hysteria. The paragraph in question was buried at the end of an article on pg 12 (mostly about Abu Bashir).
Unlikely Patek would be operating on his own though. He will have been part of a network I would have thought...no doubt he is having a chat about it in 'the comfy chair' right now.
Personally I found the comments about the police chief being promoted after lunching with extremists an interesting insight into where these views really sit in mainstream Indonesia.
And I guess none of us know how credible the report of the Anniversay Attack is (I certainly wouldn't have a clue). But its in the mix with everything else for people to make their own assessment.
Rumsfeld would probably describe it as a 'known unknown'.
