I agree that it is a little silly when people say "Stay away from busy, tourist affiliated places". In that case you may as well just stay in your hotel. Wait, dont stay in your hotel, there are tourists there... Just hide in a rice paddy... wait, Ive heard that Javanese gangs hide in rice paddies with machettes and rob you.. ok, just dont go... wait, terrorist organisations are plotting to bomb the AFL grand final.. ect ect.
My elongated point is you cant be safe anywhere you go. To be honest Im more scarred of the weather than terrorists. Every waking minute you take a risk in getting hurt, killed ect. Just keep an eye out for anything suss (like a guy walking into a nightclub with a backpack) or any political demonstrations or rallies.
I honestly believe that nothing like the magnitude of the 2002 bombing will happen again, or atlest for a very very long time. They had the element of surprise back then. Now there are more security check points, ect. If its gonna happen its gonna happen. Maybe tommoro, maybe the next trip you take in a year from now. You cant stop living. I am going in 3 weeks and am froting at how much fun I cant wait to have! Doesnt faze me at all. Just make sure you register your details with SamrtTraveller.
