MY data roaming was turned off but roaming was on so that family from home could contact us in an emergency.
(We had Bali phones and sims as well) I used the free wifi a lot to upload to fb and a few times to post on here for quick questions and answers and to check my email. It certainly does not costs to use free wifi any more than it costs for me to use my home wifi access at home to do the same.
I found it was great having an additional internet access tool as I had to share my laptop with my kids( mostly eldest)
