I've been astounded by people randomly handing out largesse to complete strangers. How would you like some total stranger giving you clothes etc? Not so sure I'd be over the moon.
BUT, what surprises me even more, is how few regular travellers to Bali appear to have the sort of friendships (with Indonesians, no less) to actually KNOW of people who may be doing things tough, and who may appreciate a little help. That way people can be helped without doing the whole distasteful 'lady bountiful' thing.
