I am not commenting on this post or any other post individually but sometimes things are "lost in translation".

Effusive thanks are good manners for us and show we are very happy to receive something and the giver feels we really like it. In Indonesia (and I think other parts of Asia) just a "thank-you" is good manners and even opening the gift there and then is considered not the right thing to do. They feel that opening up a gift and gushing about it indicates greed.
