We travelled in January, with jetstar. and my 16 y.o. had recently dislocated his knee.
He used a folding stick and actually carried it onto the plane. It was then folded and placed in the overhead locker. No one even questioned it.It had, of course,been through the scanner prior to us boarding but we didn't encounter any problems at all.
N.B make sure that you have a rubber foot on the bottom of the stick as opposed to a nylon one if using in the Bali rain. Lesson learnt this end.
