I've used solely ATMs since 2003 and with usually staying for a month at a time. I'm careful with my card and have never left it behind or had it stolen - no different to relying on the card at home. There's never been a blanket issue with ATMs being unavailable. Occasionally one machine won't be working, but there's almost always one next door to it or over the road that's working just fine - again, just like home.
I do usually take about $200-300 in cash and have never once had to use it - but it's nice to know it's there to cover me for a few days if I need it.
