Try the food from the carts or the small 'local' side of the road warungs, they may look dodgy but they taste so good and are cheap! Try padang food (you will see it set up in the window on plates.) If you are talking to some locals, ask them where they get food, I'm sure they will be more than happy to tell you.
That is real Indonesian food :)
