A long time resident also pointed out to me that it is actually not helpful to teach Indonesian children that they will be given something every time they meet a tourist.
Think about what we are instilling into the Psyche of Indonesian kids - they meet a tourist and they are given something - whether it be lollies or more healthy options, or money.
It's not about being stingy, you can still do a lot to help Indonesian children. But with the permission of their parents, and/or through responsible NGO programs is probably more appropriate.
