The area most back backers stay in is Poppies1 and Poppies2.
This area has plenty of back packer accom, close to the beach, restaurants, bars and night life.
It will always pay to book some accom. in advance and you can go from there.
I usually stay in the Masa Inn (Google) in Poppies1 but also try some of these Ayu Inn, The AP Inn, Fat Yogies, The Persona, Kedins, La Walon.
There are many other back packer hotels around Poppies1 and Poppies2.
Scroll up the BTF page until you see "search forum" click on and put in the name of some of these hotels and you can see reviews and comments.
If you Google "Tripadvisor" you can get further info, reviews and recommendations about Bali accom.
You can usually book these hotels direct, through booking agents on "Tripadvisor" such as Agoda, Booking.Com, Expedia or through Asia Rooms or your local travel agent.
