a corner at Ubud market 4 or 5 years ago. It was truely confronting and I had to shout very loudly and push the young woman back. Ahe was solid but still weighed less than me and I am not sure how a small framed person would have coped against her as Tidak ..... didn't make any difference. I had to resort to physical violence to get away. It left me very shaken and I now don't like getting into small areas on my own. I always feel OK at the pagi markets but there are a few other places and some small stalls that I avoid.
If I want to avoid the constant "You want- buy mine - good price when I'm shopping or just walking along I answer in Russian or French and hold my arms up with palms to the sky as if I don't understand. It works a treat. My Russian response is actually "Beer mt friend please"
