ATM machines dispense in rupiah, so your choice of amount is in rupiah. You do get the option to choose which language you want displayed at least on the machines I have used.
And yes, the exchange rate is lower when withdrawing cash from an ATM, rather than changing Aussie dollars on the street. You also have to beware of bank fees that you can get charged for international withdrawals. Check with your bank before you leave, because these can be really quite high.
