I get offered commission all the time when I take a friend or client shopping and translate for them. Even if the item is really small.
Tegallang is no different, prices there are soooooo cheap if you pay the local price.
Here's an example of how low they are, things I have personally bought there, never bartered.
6ft Bamboo ladder - you know the nice ones, we hang towels on it - 15,000
Large wooden fruit bowl, the very heavy dug out type - 21,000
Large white pot (to put a palm tree in) - 12,000
Various size baskets, ranging from small one for DVDs - 4,000 to large one for junk -35,000
items that I had to buy for a friend
50 cm giraffe - 22,000
20 cm cat - 7,000
set of 3 Mosaic bowel - 52,000
Large painting - 100,000
If it's a cheap item the shop keeper will ask me (in Indonesian) if I want to take something myself as commission)
