just a suggestion as I fly to Avalon and Tulla quite a lot from Sydney. If you were to hire a car at Avalon then drop off at Tullamarine it may work out cheaper for you (especially if there are more than one person)and faster! The Sita bus from Avalon meets every plane at Avalon and takes you to southern cross station. The cost is $22 one way. Then you can get the Skyline bus from Southern Cross to Melbourne Airport (Tullamarine) which costs $18 one way.
