I have flow Virgin ex Brisbane many times and no problems the return back to Brisbane could suit your friend better as it arrives in the morning 7-8am which will then should allow your friend to get a connecting flight to Newcastle.
Strategic have a larger airbus and you can get non cancellation flights from around $700. If your friend books one of these flights take out travel insurance at the same time to cover her/him in case they have to cancel.
Although Strategic virtually have day flights there and back possibly the only draw back with Strategic is that they do not get back into Brisbane until around 10.30pm hence no connecting flight to Newcastle.
Jetstar also fly out of Brisbane and sometimes you can get cheaper flights but it is not direct and you have to change flights at Darwin both going and returning (3am)but you do arrive back in Brisbane in the morning and maybe still able to catch connecting flights to Newcastle.
