I had a similar issue last year with an aged relation.
Get a doctors certificate detailing medical issue and saying the person is and will be unable to fly on the dates of the ticket.
doctor has to sign and stamp the medical certificate.
Scan the document
Send the scan copy to AA via their website email address with a request for a credit
Eventually they will issue a 'credit shell' a credit for the ticket less $40...this credit will be lodged with the person who booked the ticket on their AA account...make sure you get/have an ac login and password to access the credit.
You have 3 months from the time of issue to use it on another ticket.
If you do not get a reply soon....keep re sending it...they are quite slack and will mess you around for a while
