20%-30% is sufficient. The only effect the higher concentration has is more is absorbed into your skin. It does not stop more mosquitoes or last any longer. The military uses 30%. Concentrations above 30% absorb into your skin faster, therefore more is absorbed. It has been known to cause side effects & is dangerous for children. Even in these concentrations precautions should also be observed. Do not apply more frequently than every 4-5 hours. Do not use on face or open wounds. Do not use under clothes. Sunscreen is known to increase absorbtion. It is also recommened to wash it off once indoors, although if mossies are around I don't see how this advisable. I think this comes from the belief that air con or fans discourage mosquitoes as they don't like to fly in windy air. They may also be attracted to perfumes & after shave odours or unwashed hair.
