I always split cash into two piles each kept separate but close so in the unlikely event one lot does go missing you still have the rest to enjoy your holiday.
Credit card for hotels is great,I have two credit cards one with a lower limit of $1500,this is the only one I use overseas or for overseas transactions.if it is compromised I would not need to stress as the bank can chase its own money.
The second credit card has a much higher limit,i also take this just in case of a real emergency.
Most people tend not to loose large amounts of cash because they are aware of it all the time. People who go out on a bender or get drunk a lot are best not to have lots of cash as they get silly with it and then blame the maid or room cleaner for stealing it :)
