there is one (small and cheap) company who have their showers linked up to the subak (the filthy drains that run through the villages). if he did go white water rafting and bathed in this disgusting water, i would not be surprised that he became ill.
dead dogs, rats, food scraps, offal....god knows what is in there. take a shower in it, and you will find yourself getting sick soon after.
it just underlines an old friends comment on cheap goods: "you pay crap, you get crap" (thats the polite version).
of course, if i am mistaken and he did not go white water rafting, i apologise. but i do wish your friend a speedy recovery.
