Sister in law just moved to Bali this week with new hubby and must say I was a little jealous when they moved into their brand new apartment in Sanur with all the mod cons, including a kitchen, hot water and air conditioning. Dropped over yesterday to see how they are set my settling in and asked how the apartment held up with the big storm, and how they held up, having never lived in the Tropics. Sister replied, oh fine, it was just this morning I was having my morning coffee and looked over the balcony to see a dead body!
Turns out the Balinese neighbors down stairs had lost a loved one in the past few days and had brought her body outside to clean, so sister in law watched the whole thing, the scrubbing of the body with rice and putting flowers over her privates, the whole family coming in to have a go at washing her, must have been quite a site for a young European girl to watch on her first morning in her new country.
She was quite calm about experience, but then quietly asked, now what will they do with her? She was horrified when hubby said, "oh they'll probably burn her in the next few days!". His sister's look on her face was priceless as she asked if they would do that below her balcony. He calmly said, maybe.
