Not my 1st trip,but back in 1990 my wife & I along with our 3 children backpacked around Asia for 6 months before heading on to UK. As you can imagine,backpacking with 3 kids was at times pretty stressful.We were heading from Bali to Komodo so decided to change several hundred $ into rupiah.After changing the $,putting away our passports etc ,rounding up the kids,hauling up our backpacks,making sure we had everything,we headed off to catch a bemo to Padang Bai.Next thing the money changer is chasing us down the street.Hot&hassled I turned to ask what the hell he wanted.I'd left about 6 inches of rupiah sitting on his counter and headed on my way!He too refused to take any reward for his honesty.Certainly taught me a few lessons that day!
