but as you would know it is case by case and in my case I can eat low GI carbs in quite small amounts unless I am about to go to the gym or swim etc. Actually I can eat very little even of the "good" carbs without putting up my glucose levels. I use diet and exercise to keep my levels as near "normal" as possible. Kept it at bay for a few years by diet and exercise alone but recently and almost inevitably had to start taking metformin. I also lost 15kg in weight which I am not keen to put back on nor is my Doc.(me putting it back on that is not her as she doesn't appear to have a weight problem) Eating those things in Bali would in my case surely result in weight gain since I stay for 5 or 6 weeks at a time 3 times a year.

I cannot comment on what works for you and your family and would not dream of telling you that you are being silly.

Can't speak for anyone else but Bintang not being a strong beer has a neutral affect on my blood glucose as tested 2 hours after a meal. Yes alcohol does have a blood glucose lowering action but will not give me a hypo because metformin does not cause hypos.

The foods mentioned (mmm yum) are high GI and no good in my case at all causing a spike in glucose levels and then a dump as they do to a lot of diabetics. Obviously it is better to control what I eat and to exercise rather than to eat more carbs especially high GI ones and therefore have to have the dosage of metformin increased. My Doctor is very happy with my handling of it all and I would in any case never take medical advice from a Bali Forum. You would of course know that the nearer to normal a person keeps their glucose levels the better the chance that more serious complications will occur, if at all, later rather than sooner.

This subject is probably totally boring to most who have read this far but to other diabetics I would say please don't take my plan nor moccha's for managing the problem in Bali as any kind of advice or recommendation as diabetes management is very individual. I'm pretty sure most people would not be silly enough to get this kind of advice from here!

We are not all the same moccha and whilst I am often very very silly on this forum I am not at all silly about managing MY diabetes. However I am sure you meant well and I hope you continue to manage YOUR family's diabetes in whatever manner works for them.

Happy Christman and NY.
