This was some time ago - 2001 - right after September 11. That trip, I experienced a bit of anti-Westerner sentiment here and there. My then-husband and I were in Denpasar and stopped in to a Arab-owned establishment for lunch. I was the only Westerner in the place and, although I was respectably dressed, got a few dirty looks and I sensed a bit of antagonism ... plate being banged down,etc... but - me being me - I wasn't going to be intimidated so kept smiling and being polite and didn't leave. Well, then-husband and I both had the goat stew - he was fine, I became violently ill within about half an hour on the bike ride back to Legian. Too quick for food poisoning - methinks something nasty was added to my stew! Red cordial didn't save me that time!! :[
