I would not go without a guide. It was a great experience both at the forest and the temple(they are more aggressive and nasty at the temple). I got amazing photos and had lots of smiles. However, I saw an idiot twenty-something tourist letting the monkeys crawl all over him for a photo op. Be sensible, as our guide told us: don't carry food in your bag, a water bottle, or anything(glasses, jewelry)that will attract them. Keep in mind, they may carry rabies/syphillis; so stay your distance by being calm, respectful of their space; and remember that we are their guests.
