we have done it both ways ourself before and sometimes we have got great deals direct thru the hotel and other times we have got better deals thru an agent? Sometimes tho it is better to contact the hotel direct re the rooms as alot of agents havnt been to the hotel in question and dont realy have any idea other then the pics they got in the books but if you have a good agent they should steer you right :) but as you said sometimes there is not realy much in it :)
