Taking Vegemite and jam to Bali.

I'll would like to take a couple of jars of vegemite and jam to my friend in Bali..
I rang jetstar tonight to ask if I could take these in my hand luggage..
But we had a bit of trouble understanding each other.
Would anyone know if you can carry jars of vegemite and jam in your hand luggage or do you need to put it in your check in bag..
