Don't bother walking. By the time you get there you'll be bug*ered, worn out. Been there, done that. Get TS to drop you at the markets & call when you need to be collected from wherever you end up at on your wanderings.
Be aware that mobile phones often won't work in parts of Ubud (we tried calling Greenfields - next to TS - from the top of the hill near the Monkey Forest & ended up having to pay a driver).
If you want to be close to the markets, Palace etc try for a place in M F Rd between the markets & the monkey forest - lots to choose from of all standards. Whilst the road is busy, the hotels usually have narrow street frontages stretching back, so are quiet.
Be sure to have lunch one day at Tropical Bale (they will collect & return you). Neka Art Museum almost across the road it well worth a visit.
