Legally, every tourist in Indonesia is supposed to carry his/her passport at all times. No one does, of course. But it IS a good, sensible idea to have a photocopy with you, together with a copy of your travel insurance policy (which you'd be a dill to not have) & home contact details.
Hotels merely copy your info from sighting your Passport. Villa staff may need to take your passport away to register you with the village Head, depending on where the villa is - a photocopy usually suffices.
