you don't get any charges for purchases. only atm withdrawals fm the atm bank issuer.
what was important to me also was my time, time=money . For getting cash I didn't want to spend time finding the best rate at the money changer or having to find one late at night if I was running out.I used the card for bigger purchases,including some dinners etc.and kept cash with me for little purchases.
in total i incurred about $15 usd in a 12 day period for withdrawals at atms.
