It really had not used to be so bad. When I came to Aus from UK in 1973 we, in UK, were already used to some papers like The News Of the World and a couple of others being absolute scandal rags who if they didn't have a sensational story by deadline would happily create one or exaggerate an existing storyline.
In Aus, at this time, it was really so much better. Sadly we have gone down the same road now.
