I took about 1000 disposable syringes and needles over about a month ago, (took AGES to convince the men at customs that it was legit at 11.30pm), that were specifically to help with the vaccination programme that BAWA has been running since the onset of the current rabies problem.
The officials have already poisoned with strychnine a lot of the dogs, including owned dogs, and did it indiscriminately.
Vaccinated dogs, with collars and tags were poisoned as were ex pats pets, balinese pets, imported dogs etc.
Many of my balinese friends have dogs as pets and dogs have a place in balinese society, some are mangy aggressive mongrels but then, so are some tourists.
All things have their place.
People have been bitten by rabid dogs and monkeys and have died as a result but only because they did not commence the treatment straight away.
I hope no-one further, child or adult, tourist or balinese, is bitten by a rabid animal but if they are, there is treatment available.
BTW, I am not misty eyed, its just my new contact lens making me look so.
