I think it's a bit obscene to have to breathe in someone else's stinky second hand smoke while I'm going about my business. It's not that I think I'm going to "drop to the ground" - it just plain smells bad.
As for your suggestion to not go "where places are designed for drinking/smoking in" - how on earth does this apply to a place designed for having a meal? And since when was it compulsory for drinking and smoking to go together?
I'd be happy enough if they just had smoking and non-smoking sections in restaurants. I do find it a bit average when I sit at a table away from the smokers in a restaurant and a group of smokers comes along and sits at a table next to me and proceed to all light up. How is that of my choosing?
Surely if people can last 3-6 hours on a plane without having a smoke, they can make it till they finish their meal and leave a restaurant?
As for the scare-mongering stories of bars etc going broke since the no smoking laws were introduced - in Australia, at least, that's been shown to be not true at all. In fact, a lot of venues regained the patrons who stopped going due to the smoke being there in the past.
