I flew with a heap of stuff last Nov I think it was. I tried to organise extra allowance before I went but couldn't do so. An email I received back from them after my return stated they WOULD NOT waive the excess - they get 100's of requests they said. I wasn't offered the sponsorship form option.
We had 80kg allowance between 4 of us and we were right on that when we weighed in luckily. The young check-in guy was very nice but said if I'd been over he would have had to charge me, didn't matter what it was that I was taking.
