Hi Newbee,
You've gotta remember everyone on here loves Bali. And as GLI says..it's not Hawaii.
Bali is not the beautiful, idyllic paradise you see immediately on arrival like some places. You have to dig a little deeper, travel a little further to discover its beauty. It reminds me of the difference between Sydney and Melbourne. Sydney is beautiful to look at with its harbour, Opera House and bridge but in Melbourne you've got to spend a bit of time exploring the city...the laneways, the hidden bars and restaurants, the arts, the fashion....
Guess where I live!!! LOL
I've been to Bali with many first timers that are at first somewhat shocked by what they see; Indonesia is a developing country and the living standards reflect this. But, to me what I love about Bali and most of Asia really, are the people!! Despite their lot they are happy and spiritually alive. I'm not a religious person but I really admire the way the Balinese live. It revolves around family, community and their beliefs.
Don't get me wrong; Bali is a beautiful place. It's a bit tough judging beaches when you come from Australia but there are some lovely ones in Bali. Then there's the mountains, temples, rice paddies, ceremonies.....
Please enjoy the southern areas but also get out and experience the rest of the island if you can. My fave is the Amed area but after 8 trips we're still exploring...who knows there's probably another little spot just waiting to be discovered!!
Enjoy!
