us dollars versuses aud dollars

i changed $247 aussie dollars to $225 us dollars, and it turns out that i lose, so for the extra $40, i only make $14, normally always only take aussie dollars, but thought with the rate being so good, i'd b in front...........*lol*
In future will stick with my own currency
