I agree. Just to share, I was a bellboy in a hotel in kuta. I don't have a good smile to be honest, but I always try to smile and greet the guest, remember their first name and say hello first_name. The drivers near my counter were good and nice. I never experienced what you may experienced based on your sentence:
"It can be hilarious, if you understand some Bahasa Bali & Bahasa Indonesia, to hear what they are saying to each other about the bules behind their delightful smiles."
Some friends in the front office were talking about the guest, some kind like this: "ooh that guest is really rich, hope I can be his wife" etc. That's what I hear from them, but if you hear different, please share.
