Yes Colleen you would hope the smaller, more local TC's would tend to be more customer-friendly. It was in fact Escape Travel we went to first MissD now that you mention it and then when we made the complaint: FC. In the middle of it all there was a parliamentary enquiry into Travel Agents initiated presumably because complaints against the industry were so numerous. You'd think the precarious state of the industry due to competition with the internet would make them more inclined to ensure a good, stress-free, economically-attractive service for customers, but apparently not. I found out in the course of it that the agents themselves are paid a pittance as a base wage and so are prone to doing all sorts of dodgy things to make up a decent wage.
