there were a couple of questions about this further down.
It relates to the testing of suspect water sold in large water machine type bottles.
The water testing was carried out as in a party of a dozen, ALL were sick to varying degrees, people aged from 1 year to 86 years, over a three day period.
I could see only 1 common denominator in the whole thing, as people had eaten at different places etc.
I have a water cooler in the apartment, and everyone had used this.
The water purchased on this occasion was "Nonmin" as the usual "Aqua" was not available. (I don't think this was relevent although some locals thought otherwise)
When inspecting the cap of the bottle I became suspicious that it MAY have been removed / replaced and I could not recall if it had the cellophane heat shrunk seal on over the cap.
I asked local staff to contact someone to come and take a sample of the water away for testing.
This was done, and a day or so later I got a call from a lady asking to visit with us, and subsequently two ladies turned up with a fully prepared report, asking where the water had come from, and would I go with them to the place of purchase.
I did this, and there was a vigorous discussion regarding the issue, with the shop keeper denying knowledge and stating firstly that he had not sold it (he is the only "Nonmin" seller around to no doubt there") and then that it must have been the water vendor who was filling bottles with river, tap or whatever water, and not the shop.
At the end of the day, all I got was the satisfaction of knowing for sure what the main culprit was for the sickness.
The test report showed very high levels of dangerous bacteria (Maybe one was E Colli??), but I don't have the report here to say what the levels or the bacteria were.
Suffice to say that these ladies were astounded at the level of contamination showing on the report.
The report and visit by the ladies cost around 200K.
I believe that this was a contracting service, perhaps part of Sanglah, but I am sure that tourist police, doctors or local staff can point you in the right direction if you need testing done (heaven forbid !!).....remember to save a sample.
Moral.......inspect all seals on purchased water bottles.
Interestingly, a local warung owner told me that he used to actually buy refilled bottles at a much cheaper price than the real stuff, to use for cooking etc.....so it seems that refilling is done and there may be a "two tier" water system that happens too....maybe this was a mistake and the second tier product got leaked (so to speak) into the first grade.
Hati Hati !!
