Compulsory hotel dinners

Hi everyone

My son has managed to get a room (through a travel agent) at the Legian Beach Hotel from Boxing Day through to Jan 5. Not a cheap time to travel, especially at short notice.
But it is for their honeymoon

I don't know anything about these compulsory dinners that hotels make you pay for, but this one is ridiculously expensive. Is this something that can be negotiated on arrival? or is it built into the quote and paid for prior to departure?.
We could (and have) eaten for a fortnight for what they are being slugged for the New Years Eve dinner.
Nothing against the LBH, I know that a lot of hotels do this; but if anyone could enlighten me on this practice, and pass on any tips to avoid it I would be very grateful.
Thanks

Cheers
Frank
